An application for a New York team was presented to the Rugby Football League at a recent board meeting.

RFL to consider New York rugby league club

The Rugby Football League (RFL) will allow a potential New York club to present to members of the Championship and League One in order to gauge support.

In a statement on Monday, the RFL revealed that it had received applications for a New York team and also the relocation of Hemel Stags last week.

The RFL said further due diligence and assessment of the plans is required but that both "are judged to have the potential to help deliver the RFL's strategic vision".

Explaining the decision to encourage consortia behind both applications to present their ideas to existing clubs, the RFL added: "The board recognises the importance of further expansion having the support of the other clubs.

"Both New York and Hemel Stags will present to Championship and League One clubs, as well as answer questions regarding their plans.
