MLB trade rumors: Cubs interested in Tigers’ Nicholas Castellanos

The Tigers appear like they’ll have multiple options if they decide to move Nicholas Castellanos.

The Cubs are interested in dealing for the 27-year-old slugger, according to multiple reports, including the Detroit News and MLB.com.

Castellanos is slashing .280/.339/.467 with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs in 92 games this season. He has blasted 103 homers over his seven-year career.

Castellanos will be a free agent after the season and said last month he was not expecting to be with the Tigers long term.

"I don't have a college education,” Castellanos said at the time, via The Athletic. “But I can pick up the pieces and put a puzzle together. I'm not saying that this is 100% what it's going to be, but if I'm a gambling man, I don't see (the Tigers) offering me an extension at this point in time."

The Braves have been linked to Castellanos, as well, while Detroit is willing to listen to offers for Matthew Boyd and Shane Greene, along with “virtually any veteran on its roster,” according to an earlier report from MLB Network.

“The guys that should be worried are the guys that no one is interested in,” Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire said last month. “So, when people care, and your name is being thrown around, it ought to flatter you. That’s what I throw out there. Just be happy that someone wants you in this game.”

The Tigers have been one of the worst teams in MLB this season and entered Sunday well out of playoff contention with a 29-65 record. They’ve lost six in a row and 11 of their last 12 games.

The Cubs, meanwhile, came into the day with a three-game lead over the Brewers in the National League Central.

“The more good players you have playing well, the better you’re playing as a team, the more you can kind of focus on certain specific needs,” Chicago president of baseball operations Theo Epstein told The Athletic last week. “That’s certainly what we’re doing. We’re always trying to look for any area to upgrade that’s realistic while keeping the bigger picture in mind, too.”
