The Mets do not think Zack Wheeler’s trade value has been damaged.
New York believes it can “still get a solid return” for the 29-year-old right-hander, even though he is on the injured list with shoulder fatigue, according to a report from the New York Post, which cites an unidentified team source.
Wheeler is expected to throw a bullpen session sometime early this week and there’s a chance he could make at least one start, and possibly two, before the July 31 deadline, the report says. He’ll be a free agent after the season.
Wheeler holds a 6-6 record with a 4.69 ERA in 19 starts so far in 2019. He has spent his entire MLB career with the Mets.
“Honestly, I hate change,” Wheeler told The Athletic last month. “I’m a homebody. I like the group of guys we’ve got here. … I can’t tell you how many years my name has been in trade talks. I’m kind of used to it right now. But it never gets easy.”
The Mets entered play Sunday with a 45-53 record. They’re six games out of the second wild-card spot and trail the Braves by 13 games in the National League East.
New York began trade talks and “shifted into a more aggressive sell mode” in early July, according to a previous report from SNY.
“I’m not just saying that because it’s the right thing to say,” Wheeler said. “I’ve got history here. I love the team. I love everything about it here. Sure, some things could maybe get better. But I love it here all around. I love playing here.”
The Yankees and Red Sox were both reportedly looking to acquire Wheeler prior to the injury. He had been linked to the Cubs and Braves, as well.
Hernandez left Monday's game against the Cubs after being struck in the pitching arm by a line drive, though he avoided serious injury.

With the acquisition of Giancarlo Stanton, some are calling the Yankees "The Evil Empire" once again, and Steinbrenner is OK with that.
