The Cubs announced last week that Maddon would not return for 2020 after his contract expired at the end of this season.

Angels hiring of Joe Maddon a ‘fait accompli,’ report says

The Angels are close to hiring Joe Maddon as their next manager to replace Brad Ausmus.

According to Bleacher Report, Maddon is expected to be announced as Los Angeles' manager "a day or two" after his interview Monday. The report cites one source as saying, "It's a fait accompli, isn't it?"

MLB Network reported Maddon's interview went "very well." Not only is Maddon a front-runner to land the role, but Los Angeles is the manager's first choice, as well.

The move would make sense considering Maddon spent a collective 31 years with the organization as a player and a coach, most recently as its bench coach from 2000-05. He then managed the Rays for nine seasons before serving as the Cubs' skipper for five seasons.

The Cubs announced last week that Maddon would not return for 2020 after his contract expired at the end of this season. The decision comes after Maddon led Chicago to a 84-78 record in 2019, marking the first time in Maddon's five years with the club that the team failed to make the postseason. He brought the organization its first World Series title in 108 years in 2016.

The Angels are searching for their next manager after Ausmus led the club to a 72-90 record in his first season with the organization.
