Phillies' Jake Arrieta warns players coming up on new contracts: 'You're next'

Jake Arrieta wants players coming up on arbitration and free agency to be aware of what they're getting into.

"All of you 1-3 yr players out there better be paying attention to what’s going on in our game," he wrote Saturday on Twitter. "You’re next. @MLB."

MLB has seen a significant decrease in free-agent contracts over the last two seasons, despite record revenue in 2018.

In February 2018 the MLB Players Association filed grievances against the Rays, Pirates, Athletics and Marlins for not spending money allocated to them through the collective bargaining agreement on free agents.

Arrieta, who won the National League Cy Young in 2015 and a World Series with the Cubs in 2016, signed a three-year, $75 million contract with the Phillies in 2018. He can opt out of the deal after next season.

The MLB has not seen a work stoppage since 1994. It is the longest running major sports league in the U.S. to go without a stoppage.

Arrieta tallied a 10-11 record with a 3.96 ERA in 31 starts in his first season with Philadelphia. He struck out 138 batters and walked 57 in 172 2/3 innings on the mound.
