Scooter Gennett injury update: Reds second baseman (groin) to miss 8-12 weeks

Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett is expected to miss eight to 12 weeks with a right groin strain, the team announced Saturday.

He had to be helped off the field after injuring his groin in the second inning of Friday's spring training game against the Brewers.

The injury occurred after Gennett slid to make the stop for a ball off the bat of Yasmani Grandal. Gennett threw to pitcher Robert Stephenson, who was covering first, for the out. But then Gennett immediately fell to his knees before being carted away from the dugout and undergoing an MRI.

"It was tough to see," Stephenson said, per the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It looked like he kind of rolled weird or something."

Gennett, 28, hit a slash line of .310/.357/.490 last season with 23 home runs and 92 RBIs, making his first All-Star team last year.
