Red Sox owe almost $12M in luxury tax, top 2019 draft pick will drop 10 spots, report says

The Red Sox owe a hefty luxury tax bill.

Boston, which won the 2018 World Series, must pay $11,951,091 in luxury tax, according to a report from the Associated Press. The Red Sox had MLB’s topped payroll last season at $239.5 million.

The Red Sox’s top pick in the 2019 amateur draft will be dropped 10 places because they went $40 million over the tax threshold, according to the report. They became the first team ever to be penalized in that way after a new rule was put into place before last season.

The Nationals, whose payroll was $205 million, were the only other team to exceed the tax threshold and owe $2,386,097, according to the report. It was the second straight year Washington was forced to pay the tax.

The Giants registered the third-highest payroll at $195.7 million while the Dodgers were fourth at $195 million, the report says.

The Red Sox finished 2018 with a 108-54 record and topped the Dodgers in five games in the World Series.
