Matt Olson injury update: Athletics first baseman undergoes hand surgery; no timetable for return

Athletics first baseman Matt Olson underwent hand surgery Friday, the team announced.

Olson injured the hand on a foul tip in Oakland's game against Seattle in Tokyo on Thursday. The surgery involved excision of the hamate bone.

Oakland did not provide a timetable for Olson's return. A broken hamate bone sidelined Giancarlo Stanton the second half of the 2015 season. However, some hamate injuries take anywhere from four to eight weeks for recovery, according to Medscape.com.

The 24-year-old Olson hit 29 home runs and won a Gold Glove in his first full season last year.
