Gary Sanchez injury update: Yankees catcher expected to return after rehab game

If all goes well in a rehab game on Monday, Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez will be back in the lineup next week for the first time since April 10, manager Aaron Boone said Saturday.

Sanchez has been on the injured list since April 12 with a strained left calf. Sanchez is hitting .268 with six home runs and 11 RBIs. Despite the missed time, Sanchez still leads the Yankees in home runs.

The Yankees have not determined which minor league affiliate he will play for in the rehab assignment. The plan is for Sanchez to join the team in Anaheim on Tuesday and play Wednesday. New York begins a nine-game road trip Monday against the Angels.

Sanchez is one of a handful of Yankees who has missed time because of injuries. Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks, Troy Tulowitzki and Miguel Andujar also are out.

"You start to look forward to getting the cavalry back a little bit and getting guys slowly but surely healthy, and (we) feel like we're close with Gary," Boone said per mlb.com.
