The report says the Yankees and Rockies have likely already discussed a deal for the third baseman who will be a free agent in 2020.

MLB trade rumors: Yankees have discussed making deal for Nolan Arenado

Maybe the Yankees aren't in on Manny Machado because they really want Nolan Arenado.

At least, that's what a report from SNY is suggesting.

The Yankees and Rockies have likely already discussed a deal for the third baseman, according to the report.

Arenado will be a free agent after the 2020 season, so Colorado is in a similar situation as the Orioles were in the last offseason: Either sign Arenado up or lose him for nothing.

The Yankees clearly know the situation, and according to SNY's report, have discussed internally about acquiring Arenado either during the 2019 offseason, or before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

"People briefed on the Yankees thinking say that GM Brian Cashman — who did not respond to a request for comment — has internally discussed the possibility of trying to trade for Arenado either now or during the season," the report states. "One source said that the teams have likely talked already, but neither Cashman nor Rockies GM Jeff Bridich have confirmed this."

The Rockies and Arenado must go to arbitration this year after the third baseman asked for a record $30 million in his final year under the team's control while Colorado submitted $24 million for his final season (which would also be a record deal).

Colorado has been open with saying it wants to keep Arenado, but he may want to test free agency, and according to the report which cites an unidentified league source, it will be "difficult for (the Rockies) to keep him."
